Dear Parents,
We are down to our last week! I can't believe it is here. It is bitter sweet for me. This will probably be the last blog post for our class this year too. Next week is going to be short, and I don't think there is a lot that needs to be said besides what I am typing on here this week--so watch here for what's going to be happening.
Ice Cream Reading
Thanks for the donations offers for our party. The kids have until Wednesday to earn their scoops. They can earn them from reading 10 books or from bringing in a library card.
On Wednesday, June 26, I will be hosting a read-a-thon for the kids in our class. They can bring a book from home to read and bring a stuffed animal friend to read with if they'd like. They can have a chance to earn extra books if they still haven't filled their cone up this day. (I know--I'm a softie!).
The party will be on Thursday--so if you have been assigned a topping to send in, please send it in by then! Thanks!
Outside Activities
The next several days we will be having outside activities. Please have your child dress accordingly and think about sunscreen or a hat or things for being outside.
Bubble Day
We are having Bubble Day on Friday, June 28. For this day, your child will be allowed to bring bubbles to blow for our party. If you have extra you want to send in, we will take those for kids who may forget too.
Tote Tray Clean Up
We will be sending tote trays home on Friday for your child to clean. Every year we have the children take them home to clean them to get ready for the next class. Good ways to clean them are the dishwasher, or using a Mr. Clean Sponge to wash them down. We appreciate your help with this and if you can send it back on Monday, July 1--we'd appreciate it!
Extra Items
Any extra items that you have at home--reading books I've sent home or library books from the school, need to be sent back to school as soon as possible. Thanks for getting them back!
Also, send back any reading calendars by tomorrow! Thanks!
Last Week Items
The last week of school is July 1 and 2. On July 1, we will be taking care of finalized items with the kids and having field day in the morning. They are allowed to have a water bottle that day and they are allowed a hat as well. Make sure they wear appropriate shoes (usually running ones) and if they were one of the ones chosen from the drawing for the dunk tank--that they have the appropriate things for that.
On July 2nd, we have been asked to have no back packs that day. That day, we will have a little gift to send home with each child and their report card for the end of the year. We will also be working on their memories book that will come home that day too. I hope you enjoy the writing and the memories that your children share with you in these books. They have been a special group and have enjoyed writing so much. I encourage you to keep them writing because if you can keep them loving it--it will help them as they get older.
School will be let out at 12:30 on Tuesday, July 2. There will be breakfast served if you have been participating in that, but no lunch that day.
If I come across anything else I forgot to mention on this blog, I will send you an email!
Once again--thanks for a great year. It will be one I always remember!
Please let me know if you have questions about things that are going on!

Writing Prompt
This weekly writing prompt is to give you some ideas of things you can write about at home. To make this time more meaningful, maybe have a writing night once a week and have a writing journal that your child can use at home. Have them answer the prompt (it doesn't have to be polished and perfect--our goal is to just write). Modeling along with your child can motivate them to write more! I find that it usually works best with the kids to give them a time limit (like 10-15 minutes). That way they are writing for a duration and if they go longer, that is fine. But--usually when we have to stop at a time limit--there are a few of them that really want to keep going. Share the writing after as you have your child read it to you. It is not a required assignment, but if you'd like to turn it in you may send in the writing with the homework and I'd love to read it. Maybe I can put up a few selections on the blog each week as we see some excellent pieces! Thanks for helping make your children better writers!
Prompt #2
Opinion Writing
Tell about your favorite treat. It needs an introduction sentence (ie There are many different kinds of treats.), an opinion (ie My favorite treat is a chocolate chip cookie.), at least 3 reasons supporting why (ie Chocolate chip cookies are nice and sweet. When they come out of the oven, they warm my stomach up. Chocolate chip cookies go good with a glass of milk.), then they need a closing sentence (ie Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite treat.)
Prompt Week #1
Narrative Story (needs a beginning, middle, and an end)
Write a story about the wind. It can be a real life story that happened to you or a story that you make up. Make sure to include a beginning, middle, and an end.
May Poems
Seed, Sprout, Flower
A seed is planted:
First a sprout,
then stem,
and leaves,
and buds
come out.
Buds grow bigger,
smelling sweet,
bees and birds come
'round to eat.
Bees and birds
help flowers spread
their new seeds on
the garden bed...
A seed is planted.

About Miss Merritt
I am originally from Blackfoot, Idaho. I love small towns! I attended BYU-Idaho for my undergraduate studies and received my Masters degree through Southern Utah University. I recently passed my National Boards and am glad to say I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I love learning and enjoy helping others love it too! This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade.
I love reading! When I was younger, I used to work in libraries and I have developed a great love of childrens books. I love books by Barbara Park, Eric Carle, and Audrey Wood. I have currently been reading classics like Charles Dickens' Great Expectations.
I love the outdoors as well. I love camping and hiking, but I also love traveling and seeing new places. I am a big fan of the beach and I love swimming! I have been to Thailand a few times (my mom is from there!) and I love to see the world. Every year I have a goal to go on a vacation somewhere new.
